Last Friday we visited Scienceworks, because we have been learning all about Wild and Wonderful Weather in our Inquiry Learning Unit!
First we went to the Lightning Room to watch a show called ‘What’s With The Weather.’ We learnt that weather is controlled by three factors: temperature, moisture and changes in the way the air moves (wind). We got to see some wacky weather experiments like how to make a cloud in a bottle and how to make rain and… we even got to see real lightning flash before our eyes!! It was really cool. We also visited the STEM Lab where we transformed and turned into engineers, our mission was to work together to build and test solutions to the challenges faced by Dot, the main character in an interactive story. We worked really well and came up with some creative designs!
After that we explored the museum and exhibitions, some of our favourite parts were: racing our friends at the Cathy Freeman running race, experimenting with different sounds in the sound room, seeing one of the first ever computers which is the same size of our classroom and playing the exercise and diamond game.
We had an awesome time at Scienceworks, it was a spectacular experience for all!

Welcome back Year 1 families to another exciting term! The Year 1 students have been busy as bees starting our poetry unit in Literacy. We have been exploring different types of poetry about topics such as seasons and animals and introducing some poetic devices that poets use including similes, repetition and rhythm.
So far students have had lots of fun writing acrostic and simile poems on different topics. Take a look at some of our wonderful work below.
In Reading, students will read a variety of narratives, information texts and
poems. They will consider text structure and language features of these texts,
and will work on developing the comprehension strategies of visualising,
retelling, questioning and inferring. When reading independently, students will
focus on developing their reading fluency and expression.
In Writing, students will continue to create narratives and write a variety of
poems. There will be a strong focus on developing descriptive language in their
writing and varying sentence structure. They will use their knowledge of the
writing process to publish their favourite pieces of writing.
In Maths, students will complete simple division tasks, focusing on equal
shares. They will recognise and describe simple fractions such as half and
quarter. Students will be able to recognise and classify common 3D shapes.
Students will create simple questions, gather responses, and represent their
data in a table and graph.
In Inquiry, students will engage in the topic ‘Weather and Climate’, where
they will investigate local weather and climate conditions, collect data using
thermometers, as well as explore the effects on people, animals and the environment.
It has been a fantastic term, Students have been so engaged in their Inquiry topic ‘Food Matters’ and learning about where our food comes from. The Year 1 students, enjoyed baking bread from scratch and finding out where the ingredients came from. One of the highlights was tasting the warm, crunchy, delicious bread, with toppings!
